EDUCATION & WORK EXPERIENCE
- Graduate of an accredited education program in occupational therapy
- Successful completion of the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT)
- Currently licensed in Iowa to provide occupational therapy services or are proactively in the process for state licensure
- Demonstrates good verbal and written communication, and organization skills
- Must be a licensed driver with an automobile that is insured in accordance with state/or organization requirements and is in good working order
JOB SUMMARY
The Occupational Therapist will provide community-based services, specializing in adults with mental illness and intellectual disabilities. Includes the opportunity to participate in animal-assisted therapy, provide group therapy services, and assist with supervision of occupational therapy assistants.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Understand standards of professional conduct. Model and support ethical decision-making and uphold ethical standards.
- Evaluates customer’s functional status (muscle function, endurance, visual coordination, written and verbal communication skills, self-care ability, work capacity, etc.). Evaluates home environment for hazards or barriers to more independent living. Identifies equipment needs. Participates in the development of the total plan of care.
- Develops treatment program and establishes goals for improved function. Communicates plan of care to referring physician and other Organization professionals.
- May teach new skills or retrain customer and caregiver in once familiar daily activities that have been lost due to illness or injury, in accordance with Organization policy.
- May instruct customer in the use of various types of adaptive equipment to improve function.
- Maintains appropriate clinical records, clinical notes, and reports to the physician any changes in the customer’s condition. Submits these records in accordance with Organization policy.
- Maintains contact/communication with other personnel involved in the customer’s care to promote coordinated, efficient care.
- Attends and contributes to inservices, case conferences, and other meetings as required by Organization policy to ensure coordinated and comprehensive plans of care for the customers of the Organization.
- Identifies customer and family/caregiver needs for other home health services and refers as appropriate.
- Instructs customer’s family/caregiver and other Organization health care personnel in customer’s treatment regime when indicated and appropriate.
- Supervises certified occupational therapy assistants according to organization policy and state regulations.
- Participates in discharge planning for customer.
- Other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL EXPECTATIONS
- Ability to lift and carry:
- up to 25 lbs. frequently.
- up to 40 lbs. occasionally.
- over 40 lbs. rarely.
- Ability to climb stairs while carrying objects.
- Normal vision with correction.
- Normal range of hearing with corrections.
- Frequently perform daily duties which involve standing, bending, pivoting, squatting, kneeling, and crouching.
