EDUCATION & WORK EXPERIENCE
- High School graduate or equivalent is preferred.
- Seventy-five (75) hour state or federally approved nurse aide course is a requirement.
- Required to complete twelve (12) in-service programs, annually. Failure to complete the twelve (12) in-service training programs or any other requirement under local, state, or federal law, will result in suspension without pay or termination.
- Previous experience in geriatrics and mental health preferred. On-the-job training is provided.
- Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.

JOB SUMMARY
The Certified Nurse Aide works under the supervision of the charge nurse, providing personal care to residents in a manner conducive to the residents’ comfort and safety. The Certified Nurse Aide may be called upon to help residents with getting in and out of bed, dressing, grooming, feeding, bathing, going to the bathroom, and other personal hygiene. The Certified Nurse Aide will be called upon to provide basic treatments as required and directed by the nursing staff, including assistance with specimen collections, taking temperatures, and other duties. Certified Nurse Aides are responsible for observing and reporting changes in resident’s physical and emotional conditions to the supervisors.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Report to work when scheduled promptly and without tardiness.
- Remain on grounds through breaks and meals.
- Receive daily assignments from charge nurse.
- Participate in all in-service meetings and CEU’s as required.
- Help maintain a clean environment for residents, performing extra duties as required (infection control cleaning, etc.)
- Help maintain a safe environment for residents by abiding by safety rules.
- Transport patients to support services or areas.
- Bathe or assist patients in bathing (bed bath, tub, shower or whirlpool).
- Assist in dressing patients and undressing as needed in clothing appropriate to the time of day and season of the year.
- Assist residents in caring for and securing personal articles, labeling clothing, etc.
- Change bed linen.
- Assist nursing in dining room with delivering trays, providing oversight of residents in dining room and encouragement with eating.
- Assist nursing with oversight of residents eating in rooms.
- Provide prompt meal-time assistance (check dietary card, position tray for resident convenience, help with cutting food, buttering bread, pouring liquids, etc.).
- Report appetite changes to charge nurse.
- Provide partial or total feeding assistance and encouragement as needed.
- Record observations on meal intake record.
- Provide adequate hydration (pass fresh drinking water and ice, offer fluids frequently, record intake as directed, etc.)
- Provide between meal nourishment when indicated (distribute supplemental nourishment as assigned, provide assistance as needed, accurately record and report intake or nourishment).
- Assist patient in all elimination needs (bedpans, urinal, bathroom assistance).
- Participate in facility incontinence program.
- Perform peri-care after each episode of incontinence.
- Perform catheter care per facility policy.
- Record bowel habits and urine outputs as directed.
- Collect specimens as directed.
- Reposition immobile patients at times and in a manner as instructed or as determined by care plans.
- If needed, assist patients in exercise (active/passive range of motion ambulation, etc.) as indicated by charge nurse and individual care plan.
- Help restore independence through teaching and encouragement in ADL skills (eating, dressing, ambulating, toileting, etc.)
- Assist with resident transports for scheduled appointments and outings when applicable.
- Assist with accurate and complete records by completing daily charts as required.
- Conduct self as a professional positive member of the health care team.
- Model behaviors that reflect continued personal and professional growth.
- Carry out and follow all facility personnel policies.
- Follow facility policies and procedures when performing duties.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the charge nurse.
PHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS
- Lift requirements
- Certified Nurse Aides are frequently required to lift charts and equipment up to 15 lbs. Certified Nurse Aides will constantly be called upon to lift equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 lbs. Occasionally, Certified Nurse Aides will be required to lift more than 40 lbs. when assisting with lifting residents.
- Carry requirements
- Certified Nurse Aides will frequently be required to carry objects, including charts and equipment up to 15 lbs. Certified Nurse Aides will occasionally be called upon to carry equipment weighing up to 40 lbs. Occasionally, the Certified Nurse Aides will be required to carry more than 40 lbs. when transferring a resident with assistance. Certified Nurse Aides will be responsible for using good judgment as to when assistance may be needed.
- Sight requirements
- Certified Nurse Aides are required to have normal vision, as corrected.
- Hearing requirements
- Certified Nurse Aides are required to have a normal range of hearing, as corrected in order to respond to resident needs and take directions from physicians and supervisors.
- Socialization skills
- Certified Nurse Aides are required to work with all other persons in the facility, and the ability to get along with others and to socialize with others is essential. Certified Nurse Aides must have the ability to meet and deal with the residents and their families. Good communication and socialization skills are essential.
- Other physical considerations
- Certified Nurse Aides will frequently be called upon to perform daily duties involving bending, pivoting, squatting, kneeling, and crouching activities.
